i hope that with the transfer of nuclear technology for civilian purpose from usa and russia, it will improve...might take time, but it will, kau, you can put mor elight on it...like how can the technology be used to supply elec to suburbs (if it is...coz i am under the impression that it is going to be used for industries)

India is developing rapidly, they cannot afford to keep one of the best mumbai-suburbs without electricity

This problem has multiple dimensions and can be discussed accordingly.
Ishaan, what you are telling is say at National levels. Even discussions on the problem are happening on global level.

Global level: Newer sources of energy needs to be discussed.
National levels:
Reduction of transmission losses. It accounts for about 20% of the electricity generated.
Rapid build up of capacity for energy generation, using nuclear energy and other energy.
Stopping illegal use of electricity

Maharashtra level:
Increase in capacity of the power generation
Upgradation of exisiting capacity

Personal level:
Reductoin of energy consumption
Saving of electricity
Rescheduling energy intensive activities

Find the image attached. It was advertisment by MSEB on load shedding. http://dombivliforum.com/images/powershortage.png

...again one quesion here...why did the maharashtra gov. reject the dabhol plant electricity?......from what I know, it is beacuse that's 12 paisa costlier!!!....

The gov. can actually diversify the rates for electricity. Probably mega cities should be charged more..as people have that capability to pay...small towns/ villages should have lower rates. This will ensure that people in big cities keep tap of the way they utilize (waste) electricity.

Also I do not understand why MSEB lets TATA pull a huge chunk of its electricity production? Just because these two bodies have a contract since 1950-52. I think the contract has no value at this stage and its high time MSEB stops pumping surplus needs of the Mumbai city. Loads of electricity will be saved if load shedding starts in Mumbai. When the whole of Maharashtra is struggling to fight darkness, why is mumbai left out?.......

Even if Govt. would have bought costlier electricity, this situation would have arrived. Today the shortfall is around 5500 MW which is around 2.5 times the planned capacity of Dabhol.

Govt. has diversified the rates of electricity. MSEB has been divided into 4 companies to remove the internal efficiencies.

I m not getting whts the issue with TATA. What I understand, that as an independant power producer it reserves the right to use electricity it produces.

Load shedding happens in mumbai suburbs, while the commercial districts are exempted, rightly as it would affect the economy of the state.
