In Dombivli (West), the minimum fare collected by any auto rickshaw is Rs 12. It is right that auto rickshaw union should reduce the minimum rate and revise their tariff as and when there is a fall in petrol prices, the same way they do when there is hike in petrol prices. However, considering the present inflation, we should consider sticking to this basic rate, provided the union assure that they won't revise this fare again even in case of any upward revision of fuel prices in future, once or twice. For instance, I find that to some longer distance where they used to collect Rs 30 one year before, now they charge Rs 40, which is too high. They should roll back on this and review collecting lesser amount distant-wise. If the basic fare collected elsewhere is in excess of Rs 12 the same should be corrected to Rs 12 immediately. Also, the slab which is fixed in multiples of Rs 5 (say Rs 15, 20, 25, etc) for different distances should be restructured to Rs 12, 13, 14, etc. according to distances in the block, so that people travelling minimum distance in any block will not feel the pinch of paying higher slab amount. - l R Sridhar, Dombivli West
Btw, I am currently in Jamshedpur and the auto rates are way beyond anyone in Dombivli can expect. Minimum fare charged is around 20rs. Market is around 2 kms from college and we are charged 35rs. Share auto rates are very nominal though..they put 5-8 people in single auto @3-5 rs each.
